I got home and it was still daylight so I broke out the TX200 and set the target at 25yds. The wind was howling at 4mph!

Then I moved it in to 12 yds and took 5 shots with the Gamo Compact, off hand. I'm kinda rusty.

Nice shooting there Ron, Yep, I'd say that's about par for the course with the TX. Especially since you had that howling wind and all.BTW, which pellets were you shooting?

7.9 grain Crosman Premiers. The Gamo got H&N Match for food.
The TX shoots at 815FPS. I haven't tried the new JSBs yet but they say they are very good pellets. So until I run out of two 1250 round boxes of the Crosmans, I doubt I will try any.

Like you, I haven't yet tried the JSB's. I have only shot the CPL's and haven't seen any reason thus far to switch.Even though I haven't de-tuned my TX (945fps with cpl's), it still amazes me with it's accuracy and smooth shootability.And I swear, I just don't get any flyers with this set up.

You guys are too kind. Back in the day(when I used to walk 5 miles to school, uphill both ways) I could one hole the Gamo and the TX would be a ragged hole not a wallowed out hole.
I'm thinkin I need to practice some more. Problem is, the dog just freaks out when I open the safe cause she don't like the 'popping' noise and runs for her life.
OK, back down to Earth. I haven't picked up the Gamo Compact in over 3 years so I think I did OK. No excuse with the TX. I've been shooting it lately and I just can't hold 32 power like I used to.
I didn't post the groups with the IZH because they were way worse. That's why I like it for silohuette. Even the chickens have room for error. My favorite is the pigs. Both knocking them down and cooking them, not the metal ones though.

I've been out of comps for a LONG time now and I got bit by the bug again, complements of my brother who is buying up everything on his side of the Mississippi river. I just can't let him out do me shooting. It's a sibling thing I guess?

That's great shooting with the rifle and pistol. Me too, I've got 2 boxes of those cheapie Crosman wadcutters....but they shoot good in some of my airguns out to 15 meters. I also have 3 boxes of the cheapie hunting (dome) pellets also......and they shoot good in some of my rifles too.

I only have a few Walther barreled babies lol... Something about east of the Mississippi tho.. Alot of nice guns over there.. Its those S.C. boys ya gotta look out for...

Ron, I gotta know, why in the world are you using 32x at only 25 yards?! I generally stay at 10x from 20-50, at 20x I'd be so distracted by the wobble I wouldn't be able to hit a damn thing. Inquiring minds would like to know :-).

I guess the best way to explain it is the need to accurately range a target for field target comps. The kill zone varies in size and being a few clicks off because you don't know the exact range can cause you to split a pellet on the rim of the kill zone and not knock it down for a confirmed hit. It is especially bad when they put targets at say 13 yards or say 38 yards. These high power scopes have adjustable paralax that let you focus it like a 35MM camera. All you need to do is focus it on a known range and mark it so when it's in focus you know the range.
I sight in for 10 yards. At ten yards you can expect to see a kill zone not much bigger than your pellet, say 1/4". At 13 yards I am already having to click down elevation up to 12 clicks. If I don't range it properly and they have a 1/2 inch kill zone or 3/8 inch I might catch the edge and not drop the target. At 35 I am heading back up from the lowest point of 32 clicks down(we are talking 1/8MOA target scopes, not 1/4MOA) but if you can't range 38 yards correctly you will not be at the right setting on elevation and catch the edge of the kill zone and miss.
The targets we use are designed to drop with 3FPE. If you clip the edge of the hole it takes almost all of the energy out of the pellet and the target will not fall, and therefore a miss.
When I hunt, which is almost never, I back it down to 8 power.
