Mike Melick or anyone who has both a QB and B-26,
Mike, I read in your "Good news for QB-78 fans....." post about QB's in .22 being louder than springers.
Does anyone know if a QB 78 or 79 rated 625 - 650 FPS in .177 is louder than a B-26 in .177 with a muzzle brake?
I'd really like to try co2, but I really want quiet more that's why I was thinking QB.
If the QB is really louder, can someone give me a ball park $$ figure as to what it cost them to get quiet?
I need a 10 - 15 yd quiet occassional backyard plinker. I have other hunters.
Or maybe can someone recommend a springer around 500 - 600 FPS that's real quiet.
Have I said QUIET enough... :D
Thanks...Gopher

As much as I like QB's, they do have a bit of noise with them...just the price of co2 unless you add an attachment to the muzzle (or strangle off the co2 for a very slow rifle).
Springer, but I really like the following (which aren't all that cheap). Have tried all of these, and while they hoover around the 570-625fps mark in .177, are quite quiet as issued.
R7 or HW30...new or used...but $$.
RWS 24...going to have to be used...can find them for about $125-150...came in .177 or .22.
Slavia 630 or the slightly fancier 631...going to also be used...can find them for $100-$150

I have both the QB 78 in a .22, the Qb79 in .177 and the B26 in a .177 cal. Bottom line is that the quietest is the b26. stock, home tuned it spat crosman premiers at 946 fps, crosman heavies at 780 fps. It is an excellent hunting rig, and i kept it with open sights. It can hit a 2 inch circle consistenly at 25 yards. Now, the qb79 is the loudest, and is a 640 fps gun with rws hobbies (7.9 gr). But is super accurate. Did a crow with at head shot at 25 yards. In the middle is my qb78. It is quiet enough not to disturb neighbors and was able to do a rabbit with a lower head/ neck shot at 35 yards. I shoot rws hobbies (11.9 gr) out of it at 545 fps and i get consistent 55 shots out of 2 powerlets. The 79 i have it rigged to a 9 oz. co2 tank and i am getting over 500 shots at speeds over 600 fps!!!. But the best backyard plinker is without a doubt the Beeman R7 in either .20 or .177 cal. (680 fps (7.9 gr)on .177, 605 fps (9.80 gr) with the .20). And is the quietest gun you can buy. The target makes more noise than the rifle... but you can buy all three of your choices for the price of an R7...

Ig you get the QB78, then order a Umarex muzzle brake for the RWS/Umarex 850 Air Magnum. When you get it, glue in the end cap and add some tape to it. It'll quiet the QB quite nicely!
I have one on a QB79 with all the power mods done and when fired, it's about as loud as a springer.
-
Go for the QB and get her tuned from Mike M. Then order a Muzzle break from Rich in Mich and she will be whisper quiet(no need to tape or glue)
My 2 cents
-
Is it quieter than an R7??? that is acceptable quiet in my neck of the... ehmm... woods? (suburbia like woods...)lol
-
by the way, Patton... my qb79 would make you proud... Your rifle is the inspiration for mine. I just could not find a 3.5 oz bottle so i fed her a 9 oz.plus the bottle came with unsightly paintball decor... so i got camo wrap and now looks a bit more... acceptable. also i keep going back and forth between a leapers 3-9x32 and a 62 bugbuster... the larger one makes it easier to load pellets... but the shorty, beside being illuminated, gives it that sniper rifle kinda look... what scope do you use on her?

I have a QB78d that I tuned with the help of this forum and Mike. She's shooting close to 700fps with the temp we have here now (90's). I made my own Q-tip and having been shooting springers for quit sometime..when I shoot my QB I sometimes doubt if the I have co2 on my QB then just hear the pellet hit the target. I have seen post on the TKO brakes for $30-45 and swear on it's purpose. Here's the website http://www.tko22.com/TKO_gallery/

Thanks eveyone for the advice.
My B-26 and B-25 are both pretty quiet , but at 10 yds, they're killing all of my traps that's why I need low FPS and still accurate.
I have the feeling that a QB 7X with trim is gonna cost about as much as a used R-7.
So, I think I'm going to have to track down someone who has them and hear it for myself.
I've just started on this hobby, and I've bought 4 springers (3 from MM) in the last few months.
I think Fathers Day might be my last excuse for a while to get one. :)
Anybody on Long Island, NY have a quiet QB or R-7 and don't mind giving a demo for me?
Maybe I'll give a stock QB a try. I think they let you try them out at Cobra Air in Sufolk County.
I'll be watchin the classified's for those of you looking to thin out your heard...Thanks again...Gopher

Jorge >> geewhiz380 is from NY and has couple of QB78d with TKO muzzle brakes
-
I went with a Tasco/Golden Antler from Optic Planet. This scope was highly recommended from a bunch of guys on the GTA forum. 3x9 w/ AO adjustment w/ rings $40.00-48.00 shipped.
-
let me know when you want to meet and where. I got both. and am in suffolk county...
-
I'll have to try and find geewhiz380. Maybe he's not too far away.
lilysdad621 - that'd be great. It would be nice to put a face to the font. I'm in Nassau near ther Meadow Brook...PM coming.
Pulled a good one! Since I haven't made up my mind yet, I convinced the family to get me a chrono for F-day.
Next purchase still ok'd :emoticon:

It was great meeting you and thank you so much for all your help. My boys were very impressed and overwhelmed by the shear amount of choices at Cobra.
It is people like you and all the other folks I met at the L.I.F.T. competition over the weekend that were so helpful and friendly.
You make this the kind of sport that I want myself and my boys to get into.
So, you all solved my problem...I need a springer AND a QB78 (stock form was very quiet) for the yard... :) :)
I picked up a quiet Avanti 853...QB78 soon...and I still want an IZH 61 just because my son thinks it's cool. (hey, if that's what it takes...)
Everybody thanks again!

Just remember that the Co2 air guns are dead in the water when it gets cold out. They are always good for indoors. Springers you can shoot anywhere, anytime and cold weather does not slow them down.
-
I am glad i was able to help. As per the cold spells, well at 50 degrees you will notice a drop so yes, Gene_SC is right, but you got the avanti for that. wait... my qb78 shot 480 fps with a .22 and 35 degrees outside. If you need the extra 10 fps you can shoot the pumper... But with 30 feet available, any rifle will do. So go ahead, get all of them and join the party! call me next time you get time to come out here... we can take your kids to the range and I got some toys that you and your kids might want to try... But i am not responsible when your next christmas list starts to look like a page from Cobra Airguns inventory, pal... LOL

Again for backyard plinking you can not beat the Daisy 953 Target Pro or any of the Avanti models using the same power plant.
It is a single pump pneumatic, shoots around 500 fps, is ultra quiet and super accurate. No workout to cock the thing, no expense of CO2 to buy and it likes most any pellet. Very inexpensive and not much to not like about it!
If you want CO2 quiet you need to go with a Talon SS with CO2 tank or the Benjamin Marauder. Both are pricey but will give you CO2 quiet with an attitude!
-
Springer is best for all season shooting. Co2 for outside shooting is only good in the warmer months.
-
Actually it is my understanding that HPA is also not affected by temperature so it would seem HPA is the best for year round hunting. Easier to shoot accurately and more powerful.
But he is looking for a short range quiet plinking gun. While many springers would fill that bill, the gun I reach for in that situation is the Daisy 953.
Plinking is by definition for fun. To me it is not real fun to have to concentrate intently on my hold for each shot to make sure I hit. Also I am not concerned with the power when plinking, but just having fun and that Daisy is a ton of fun. Not enough challenge you say? Hang grapes or paintballs on a fishing line with a hook and back off 10 or 15 meters!
Enjoy.

Thanks Again everybody,
I picked up a used Avanti 853 and took it on an extended vacation this month. I'm spoiled!!!
I never imagined something so accurate! At 10yds, it was one hole all day. I couldn't ask for anything quieter.
I challenged my sons to a 10 meter competion and it was a draw...20 X's to their 20 X's. Granted we were resting on the rail.
We had to spice it up after a while because it was so accurate that we tied cherries to a string and gave them a swing...that was really father son fun!
I am still going to get the QB 79 in .177... sorry Mike M for not being in touch. We have a no TV/Internet policy on vacation.
It forces us all to remember what it all supposed to be about, and I didn't have your number handy. I'll be in touch.
And Mike the B-26-2 and B-25 put a big dent in the critter population thanks...
So, it turned out not to be a QB or springer that fit the quiet bill. Now I need a diopter sight for it so I can actually see what I hit!
-
Congratulations! The Daisy Avanti 853 is even a better gun than the Daisy 953. Though at 2.5 X - 3 X the price. Both seem to be build on the same power plant, but the 853 seems to be built with more durable materials. I know the stock is wood. Is the receiver and the cocking lever metal? What about the front sights? They are plastic with metal inserts on my 953. Also the cocking lever is plastic and flexes on cocking. It seems cheap, but is a one hole tack driver and has held up to a lot of shooting to date.
I owned a QB78 and several variations of it and sold all of them. I was very under impressed with that gun design and power plant. Seals kept failing on all of them. I was quite impressed with the accuracy of the model 79 target version, but again seals kept failing.
-
I also have a 953, and yes, is a great rifle. But it cannot compare with the qb family. Yes, seals go, but also on a pumper, and i rather replace them on the qb than trying to get them from Daisy. I also took my 79 apart to see if i could better it. the seals needed some smoothing and boring. I cleaned the inside completely and put new barrel seals (all this seals came from Lowe's). I now have a rifle that averages 670 fps (.177) with crow mags (8.8 gr) and can stack 10 pellets in a hole no bigger than a penny at 20 yards. My 953 gets to 20 yards... with rws hobbies (7 gr.). At 10 yards it can pretty much decapitate a lego action figure. My point is that they are very different rifles, and they both introduce you to a great hobby. There aren't better or worse rifles... is all in how much time you want to devote to them...
