: help with a mmB26 stock
: Magnum January 08, 2010, 04:10:00 AM
My youngest son Rick 13 yrs  after allot of fire wood stacking is now the proud owner of a .177 mmtunedb-26 he loves it :) The stock looks great stripped and finish tongue oil and is perfect in every way except for....  it has a hair line crack on both sides of the pistol grip starting at the rear of the trigger guard and running 2/3 the way back through the pistol grip. It appears to be a common natural grain fault in the unknown Chinese wood not sure?   I can open the crack only a small way when I applied some bias on the stock.  We thought about getting a new stock and start over but could not find one. So our plan now is to pre drill a dowel or a counter sink screw or both? Its going to be really hard to insert glue if not impossible plus I don't want it to show.
I am concern about doing it wrong and want  it to look nice and  be a one time permanent fix and forget. So any and all thoughts/Help/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tony.

Have you checked with Mike to see if he has an extra stock?

If Mike doesn't have a stock for you, I would have Timmy Meredith fix it for you. He has done some fine work on fixing cracked stocks in the past ! And he's a GREAT GUY !

If you can put some pressure on the stock to open the crack a little way you should be able to force ( trowel ) some epoxy glue in the crack then clamp it till it is cured usally over night and the next day I would drill a hole inside the stock down into the pistol grip not all the way through but about far enough to span the crack  and then drill a hole for a1/2 dia to 5/8 inch dowell then you can coat a dowell with epoxy and put some of the epoxy into the hole too then you can put the dowell into the hole fix the stock ( note you need to put either a flat on one side of the dowell or cut a grove down the side of the dowell so the glue traped in the hole can squeeqe out , a lso it is a good idea to pre fit and cut he length of the dowell first so it is eayser so you don't have to try to cut off the part of the dowell after it dryes. And since you have allready striped the stock you will not have to worry about protecting the varnish finish. ( PS epoxy glue has alcohal as it's thinner and can be used for clean up before it is cured.and if you make an error and go through the pistol grip you can put a end cap of a different wood as a trim pice. I've fixed quite a few of stocks this way includeing stocks in 2 pieces  and it  works fine. It is a do it your self job dosn't need a lot of tools ou a hi amt. of skill.Howie If you need any more information my phone is  727-345-8356
