L. I. Hunting Season
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:13:37 PM »
Just a reminder to the Long Island GTA members,,,,,,,, small game season opens up on November 1st.  If you haven't hunted before now is the time to get signed up for a hunter safety course,,, you can find the available courses listed on the D.E.C. website.  For those of you who've hunted before I imagine you're as excited as I am over the upcoming season.....

I signed up for Nov Hunter Safety Course

At least I hope I have.  It's the third email I sent to the guy.  I wished I could have taken the course sooner, but "life interrupts", and the September option had to pass.  The most valuable aspect of getting a hunting credential is to have extra tags in Pennsylvania with my cousin and our friends!  I love venison above all red meats.  Soaked in coca cola, fresh rosemary and garlic for 2 days and then grilled to 140oF.  The back-strap is my fave cut...  MMmmmmm  Tall Rabbit....   Driving a deer hope on the hood of my Suburu might be awhile in the future, but I'm looking forward to learning how to cook a nutter or a bunny as well.  Killing them is easy compared to making them taste good out of the pot.   I havn't eaten meat in months...  I don't buy meat, FYI.  But I eat it if it's game.  Well, I'd buy a nutter from you, LongIslandHunter, but been avoiding swine, steer and yard birds for a while.  Starlings are!edible?  4 and twenty starlings baked in a pie! I'm game!  All joking aside...

Could you guys who have taken a State Hunter Safety course explain a little about what we are going to learn?  My bet is that it will mostly be about regulations, property law and weapon saefty, and a little about safely cleaning a harvested animal.  The course is 10 hours, over 2 days on separate weekends (to thin the crowd, I gather.)

What should I expect to learn?

Thanks for your experience.

Hey Neil,,,,

The last hunter safety course I attended was 9 years ago when my youngest daughter first got her license.  I already had my license but I sat through the course with her (2 days back then also) and while I originally thought I was gonna be bored outa my mind sitting there I actually found the class extremely interesting.

They covered just about everything you could possibly think of,,,, game identification and habits, hunting techniques, skinning, gutting, care of the meat once harvested, safety, basic game laws, and so many other topics I can't even recall them now, but the class was really extremely informative and I was really impressed.  They also gave each student a bunch of really excellent printed material including landowner permission slips, color game I.D. charts complete with detailed pics of the tracks made by each animal.  It was really a great class.  I think you're gonna really enjoy it.....

They Cancelled my course...

I was signed up for the course Nov 1 and Nov 8.  They cancelled them, "do to reasons beyond our control."  We were encouraged to take it at another location, but alas, it was not a convenient place.

Looking for another course!

Rats.  Doe season is coming...
