Shooting Prone
« on: February 21, 2009, 09:05:35 AM »
Prone is my main discipline.  I shoot 2 cases of ammo per year (10,000 rounds) and you would think that the words would just pour on to the page as I describe how to get down in position, aquire the target in my sights and squeeze off a round.  You could think that, but you'd be wrong.  I forgot who posted the picture of the biathlon competitor, but that picture displays a position that works for some people but not for everybody.  For one thing, he is wearing skis and for another he is lean and slender and both of those things allow him to successfully use that position.  How you breathe, or rather what part of your body is working most during your breathing also comes into play.  Even though this is my main thing I really am at a loss for how best to introduce you to this most demanding and zen like shooting position.  Not to worry, I have something WAY better than I could do.  How about, not one, but 2 NRA manuals plus an excellent article all available for download at no additional charge!  Smallbore and air rifle are like brother and sister.  A relatively slow projectile that stays in the barrel long enough to brutalize you for the smallest transgression means that what you read about smallbore prone is also true of  air guns.
These two manuals together are nearly 90 pages of reading and we can follow up with discussion here on GTA.

In the grey box there are 3 downloads available.  Print them out and make your own book for future reference.  As soon as you guys want we can do our first prone match, but I'd suggest you give yourself a little time to get used to the position.  A week or two should be good.

Well, ordered two slings -- but they didn't arrive Friday.  I did talk with J Woodcock this evening and I am going to have him machine a dovetailed sling mount to fit the vintage Walther LGR-U if he can.  I might just have to look into putting a sling mount on the AR2078a, though.  CO2 might be a heck of a lot more convenient for prone shooting.  I have downloaded the articles and will give them a look.  Thanks.
