Target Height
« on: February 16, 2009, 01:53:10 AM »
I looked up the CMP rule on target height for 10 meter events and here they are just  in case you want to make your range exactly like a 10 meter legal range.  I certainly am going to make some adjustment to where I place my target and expect it to help my score.  My target has been pretty low, like just above knee level.

Standing     1.4 meters or 55 inches  +/- 2 inches or 5 cm

Kneeling       .8 meter or 31.5 inches   +/- 4 inches or 10 cm

Prone            .5 meter or 19.7 inches     +/- 4 inches or 10 cm

OK, so I need to make a 3-position backstop, get myself a sling, and learn how to use it.  Wonder if anyone shoots target rifles like the LGR-U from the prone position?  And cocking a single pumper from the prone position seems inconvenient, too.  Maybe I should put some diopter sights on the BSA Scorpion carbine and go PCP.

Just for clarification,...you are saying that for a standing position target, the center of the  bull's-eye should be 55 inches from the ground,....not the bottom of the target itself, correct??  Heck I'll try anything I can to improve my scores,....is there a handicap in target shooting,...kinda like in golf?!?!?!?? LOL's I have noticed that shooting from the 8 yard mark in the house, my groups are better ( duhhhhh that's because it's closer!!!!) ,...but the new trap sitting on the old trap on a 4' ladder does give better results and is does relieve the hold strain when hesitation sets in!!!! Seems I'm less prone ( no pun intended) to rush the shot as well, tjk

The ISSF rules specify "center of target" be 1.4 meters above the SHOOTERS floor level.
So you have to adjust for any slope on your floor.  I measured 1.4 meters at my shooting position, then use a cheap Home Depot laser level to locate that level at the target.
I would think it is similar for the NRA/CMP rules.

Twoother clarifications, please- I started wading through the ISSF rules over the weekend.

1) For standing 10m,wheredoes the shooter stand in relationship to the 10m mark? Forward toe?Muzzle? Other? I was a little unclear on this.

2) Is there a place todownload the exact target?I read that the downloadable 5-on-1 target should be printed at 125%, and saw the bull dimensions. The one I printed out was definitely undersized. I know they're in stores or something, just thought there might be a standard regulation download somewhere.

I am really interested in trying. and playing as close to "official" as possible. I guess the weekdays is the time to do the lawyering. In the ISSF rules, both smoking and cell phones were strictly forbidden on the range, so there are going to be some violations anyway... also I think the doping section may apply to gin-based substances so that's when I quit reading.

Lotta rules for a dang bb gun match! Thanks for putting all this together and the tutorials. I know it will raise my level of shooting!

Try this place to get the official target. The NRA has plenty of targets to keep you going for gold. They are cheap.

To tell the truth, I kind of like the 50 ft NRA smallbore target. It is a little bigger than the 10 meter and is simpler to score. I started using them because I had them and they are not a bunch easier than the 10 meter target. The 10 ring is about the size of a .177 pellet hole or smaller vs a dot on the 10 meter target. I have regulation 10 meter targets and the Edelmann targets are my favorite 10 meter target because the holes are punched out so clean with a wadcutter pellet.  For prone though it is easy enough to stay in the center of the bull on any reasonable target with a decent rifle and good pellets.
Champchoice is my primary target source.  Heck, they are where all my money goes.

Of course Charlotte ... if you're running short of money for essentials like targets and pellets ... and knowing your avocation ... maybe you should emulate another li'l ol' lady who placed an ad in the local paper ...

"For Sale ... Steinway Grand Piano, by lady with beautifully carved legs ... !"

Mick, I was thinking about your post about the shooting stick/seat.  The reason that never caught on here is because we have lawn chairs.

Dave
re: the shooting line, you keep your FEET behind the line, the rifle barrel can stick out beyond the line.  Since I don't shoot kneeling or prone, I don't know the rules for them.
re: the distance, is from the shooting line to the target face.

re: the target
You can make your own...IF you know the diameters of the rings.  Use the Pellant target software  (http://home.hiwaay.net/~ispellan/Software.html) and you can make most any target.  The neat thing is you can make custom targets.  For example a practice target with 2 rings; inner black ring same size as the black bull, outer white ring same size as the 1-ring.  With this target you are either in the black or not.  And now you can make special size targets for the kids.

Very true on the lawn chair thought, Luv !   Since last Fall when the quack, with a look of anti-gun horror on his face, said it was OK for me to try a little shooting again, I've mainly been shooting while sitting in one on the back deck.   I have dozens of golf practice whiffle balls strung up on flower tying wire from branches of the trees on the hiillside behind our cabin up here on Waldens Ridge.  The distances - not measured - vary from 10 to 55 yards so they basically emulate a crude FT course.   Makes for fun practice especially on a windy day with them swinging wildly like demented pendulums.   The big snag, of course, is untangling them from the branches after a good solid hit

By the way ... I bid on a used "Gamebird" English shooting stick on E-bay over the weekend ... should be here by early next week - lol !
