More shop feather
« on: June 16, 2010, 03:05:47 PM »
You all know the story out in the shop tuning when the unwanted pest show up at the feeders. Today's shop pistola was the 800MAG and I found a pellet that she really likes Gamo's imitation of the Predator. I had one loaded and ready to go when the small Cowbird showed up so I just eased the barrel around the corner of the door and zipped one into him. The Cowbird just fell to his side after a center mass shot. About 15 minutes later the Grackle showed up and with another GamoPred hehe loaded I just did a repeat and he fell next to his little buddy. I let them lay in hopes to draw others in but not today so I grabbed them up when I closed up the shop for the evening and grabbed a couple pic's. Time to gather the gear together for a night patrol hunt and may the Hunting God's smile down on me tonight, last night was a slow one. Ed

Way to go Ed!  You are litterally making "a killing" with your pistolas! :)

Are those smaller ones really cowbirds?  Because I shoot a couple every year around this time and I always thought they were young Grackles or Grackle fledglings.  I just shot one a couple of days ago and there was a Grackle about 20ft away so I thought it was its mother or something.  They had the same exact walk.  When I first saw the "cowbird" walking on my lawn I thought it was a Grackle because of that distinct walk they have, which is like a crow's.  I think it's still in the backyard (dead).  It is identical to yours with the brownish head.  I always thought they start out like that and then get the blue/green tin and head (the males), or they stay with the black/brown if they are female Grackles.  But in the back of my mind I 've always wondered if they were cowbirds.  I never see them late in the summer though.  Always in May or June when most fledglings hatch or are old enough to fly.  So that was my reasoning for thinking they were young Grackles.
