Scope mount frustration
« on: April 23, 2009, 04:51:22 PM »
Got my Diana (RWS) 48 .20 from Troy, already equipped with the new Leapers RWS Lockdown mount.  Great system, but it's too damn high!  Even with the lowest rings I can find, the best I can manage is a chin weld, forget about getting my cheek where it belongs!  This thing uses a Weaver/Picattiny mount.  And the only other rings I have on hand that have a chance of staying put on this rifle are a set of high 30mm Accushots.  The 30mm is okay, I've got an MTC Viper for this rifle, more on that later, but the high rings are still too high.

So does anyone know how high the RWS 1 pc. 30mm Lockdown mount is?  Or can you recommend something else that will stay put on a Diana magnum springer?  This is frustrating the hell out of me, I know this thing is really accurate if I could only come up with a consistent hold/cheek weld.  I was all ready to switch scopes around, I have lots of 1" rings, but nothing that will stay put on the Diana in 1" either.  Too bad the BKL's aren't available any more.  Later.

Dave,,,,,

On my Diana 48 .20 cal I just used an Accushot 1 piece mount and it's held rock solid.  I went through the same mounting process I always use in that I cleaned everything, and I mean everything, with denatured alcohol first and let the blue loc-tite cure for a full 48 hours before taking the first shots.  I haven't had any movement at all in either the mount or the scope and I've done a lot of shooting with the rifle......

Daved:  I have the high "Lockdown" on my RWS 350, and 460 Magnum.  I feel the scope is too high as well.  But on both my RWS 48, and RWS 48/52 (older model of the 48, same rifle) 177 rifles I have a set of Burris all steel "High" mounts.  I have the RWS 1 inch 3-9X42 mm scope and the scope bell "just clears" the air rifle's action.  This is as low as the scope can be mounted.  I have had no problem with these two rifles...the scopes and mounts are rock solid.  The rear mount is touching the rifle's recoil screw.  I would recomend the Burris steel "high" mounts.  They have been fine for several hundred rounds.  Do not use alloy mounts and rings...they will move, and the scope will move in the rings...no matter how tight the mounting screws are!  The only alloy mount that has worked for me...is the RWS "lockdown" mount with two locking pins, and four side screws.

Dave,

I also have that mount, and with the Leapers lockdown/droop compensator mount it was (like yours) too high.  But with the neverending frustration I'd had w/ the RWS adjustable mount being totally unstable upon the recoil (and finally stripping out the threads, it was a welcome relief.  Rock Solid.

That said, I did go put a cheek riser on it from Cablas's.

It's now a perfectly natural weld, I don't notice it the pad, and never look back.

I appreciate the responses.  I just ordered some Leapers 1 pc. med. mounts, I plan on redrilling the existing stop pin hole for a larger pin, and if possible, I'll add a second stop pin like the RWS Lockdown mount.  I ordered both 1" and 30 mm, so hopefully something will work ;-).  And if that still doesn't quite do the trick, I'll order a cheek pad, Mike.  Or maybe install an adjustable butt pad.  Later.

Dave, I'm having the same concerns. I'm thinking of getting a Benji 392 with a Leapers 4x32 mounted from PA. But, looking at the picture of it, the scope looks awfully high. If I do order it, I'll probably look for a cheekpad.

Wow !

If they are seriously shop-mounting their scopes that way, they've lost their mnd (!)
