TF 99 or 87?

I have a TF 99 and just love it!  I know the 87 is a little more powerful, but it is also a few dollars more expensive.  What is the difference between the two?  

Now that I've sold off my Air Hawk and Titan, I only have one .177 gun!  Since I've had great success with Techforce guns, I'm thinking of getting a new Techforce gun of some sort.  A TF 89 is a safe choice since I love my .22 89.  

What do you guys think?

I liked my TF99 (QB36-2) in .177, but I sold it... never had the 87 so no help here. I have the Beeman SS1000 version of TF89, also in .177, and like it better than the TF99. It was much more finished on arrival than the 36/99. It was not as heavy as the underlever 99 and is a break barrel, which I prefer.

There is a lot of information here on the 89 series and clones as you probably know. I didn't think the 87 had much in common with the 89s but I don't know.

I have the 87 in .177. The more I shoot it the more I love it. It's very accurate and powerfull. The only thing I really dont like about it is the twang. I did a lube tune which lowered the twang a bit, but its still there.

Well it doesn't, but I've never been disappointed in their guns.

Hi randy ... was looking at the TF 87 myself when i decided to search the gta for info and see your post and torn with the same decission 87 or 99 i read the 87 weighs more with a little more power but fear it may be difficult to shot but the 99 being lighter with little less power may be more suitable and costs less 125$ at compessco. how does your 99 shot between the 30 to 60 yard range and what numbers are you getting from it if you don't mind i am more into hunting with my air rifles but still spend alot of time at the bench.

I don't have a chrony sorry!  Mine shoots very well out to 35 yards which is as far as I can shoot in my yard.  At 35 yards you have to aim just a bit high as it is starting to arch.  

To be honest I've never hunted with it yet!  I hunt with its brother the TF 89.  I was going to use it in KS and ended up robbing the scope off of it for my powder burner so I never tried.  I didn't put it in the case on the way home and the trigger guard got broke.  It was already cracked a little when I got it from Jaymo, so no big deal.  

The thing that is different from an 87 is that a 99 is an older model rifle.  It actually has leather seals instead of the newer plastics.  That isn't an issue for me, but it may be for some.  

Since I sold all of my .177 except my Whisper, I'm thinking about getting an 87 in .177.  I've had zero luck though with the inexpensive .177 guns.  I may just save my $$ and get a "real" RWS 34 in .177 or REALLY save my money for either a Cometa or a R9.

You just sold it to me!  I believe the Hammerli Titan is the same as the TF-87.

I also owned a TF-87 in .22.  You have to make sure you get the two screw model trigger.  The .22 hit hard and was extremely accurate.  IIRC 14.4gr at about 800 fps?.  The .177 Titan I got from you is shooting 7.9 around high 900 fps.

I don't believe they are any lighter than the TF99/97s.  Different animals.  The TF-9x series are way less powerful in either caliber.  My 97 shot about 560 fps with 14.4gr.  My 97 was a joy to shoot.  All day shooter because it was so buttery smooth and easy to cock.  In my opinion a way better balanced rifle and easier to shoot than the 89/Titan.  Trigger on 9x is a direct sear so not much you can do to significantly lighten it without making it dangerous.  However, I smoothed mine out and it was very consistent and pleasurable to shoot.  I regret selling mine to this day.  At 20 yards it was my champion "can't miss" rifle for my Gamo squirrel.  

So really depends on what you want.  Break barrel or under lever.  Magnum or all day shooter.  Both accurate but 87/Titan are more hold sensitive.  

They're cheap get both.

I may sell a certain chopped Titan in .177 soon?  I tweaked the barrel and it is shooting spot on now.  Maybe...just maybe...

By the way the Titan feels to me about the size and power of a Webley Patriot.  Don't kill me but I believe similar.  Quality of build and aura not the same...

Naw the Titan is more like an 89.  The 87 is a underlever gun.  

I have no luck with .177 guns at all!  My Whisper is the only one I've owned that I'd keep and it had to have a trigger to make it acceptable.

Crud.  Right Randy.  Guess GTA has been shut down so long I've forgotten all my Chinese rifles.  You're right I was thinking of the 89.  Is the 87 more like a Diana 460?

My take is looking for power in .177 is looking for trouble.  Sure I've got some flame throwers including a Diana 48 but to be honest I've gotten to like the lower powered .177 like HW30s, Diana 24, Diana 35 or Daisy 140, CZ 431.  Joy to shoot.  Shoot accurately.  Don't beat you up.  Just a pleasure.  Save the high powered stuff for .22, .25 or PCP.  I've got several "magnum" .177 that shoot high 800-900 fps.  Don't shoot them that much anymore.  

I might look through the bunch and see what should go.  I should seriously consider putting up the Big Cat, M48, NPSS, etc.

I think I'm going to hold off buying air guns for awhile until I sell some of my other hobby stuff!  Just so many guns I really want!  I think I'll just be happy with my Whisper for now.  It is so accurate, light and easy to shoot.
