Why shoot field target
« on: February 13, 2009, 02:37:47 AM »
I found this post at the Crosman forum by a gentleman named JohnB . He puts in words what I've been tried to say about shooting field target . Rather posting a link , I just copied and pasted the post . I hope John doesn't mind , I don't think he would . kirby                                   I keep telling folks, "get to a field target match" it IS worth your time.
 Then people say silly things like "I dont shoot FT" , "I only hunt", "I dont have an FT rifle", ..... , ..... . But what they are really saying is, "I dont like airguns all that much so it isnt worth my time".
 Wanna test drive a Whiscombe? How about a Mountain Air custom? Wonder if a BigEd sear is any good (I tested one at the GOB club and it's right nice)? Would you like to buy a BKL253 mount w/scope stop all attached to a Gamo Shadow for $55.00? Need scopes, parts, advice, airguns, goodtimes, want to improve your shooting. Want to shoot a DAQ .458, a FWB, how about the Team Crosman Disco's? I've done that and this old squirrel huter/paper puncher did all that and more where? At our local FT club. This year at the FT Nationals there is a PFT (pistol ft eh?) match and I would think a lot of Crosman rigs will be used. Personally I am working up a 2240 for PFT. A couple of the fellows at the GOB club in Pulaski TN live in the Nashville area (NO shootin allowed), I happen in live "fairly" close to them and have 16 acres and access to 3000 undeveloped acres so they sometimes stop by to shoot. Now dont get the idea that a "serious" FT shooteronly owns FT rigs, FAR from it , rather they own every darn airgun ever made. And it's not all FT, we shoot sillywet, targets, spiners, tin cans, basiclly we shoot airguns, a lot!
 So you dont (yet) shoot FT, okay, dont have a FT rig ( a CR160 will do it) I or someone will lend you one, maybe you just would'nt shoot FT even if you were paid, well okay BUT if you wont go to an FT shoot you just dont like airguns.

I'd love to shoot FT. Sounds like a great idea. Where can I do this or how can an FT shot be arranged in the North Florida area?

That is a really good write up on field target. My brother is one of those who says he only hunts.

My view of field target;

You start by getting comfortable shooting at known distances using paper targets. Hole after hole after hole later, you get bored and move the target and repeat the process. Then to make things interesting you move the target again and again and see where you hit.

Then one day you place those targets in areas where you might expect to find game and try hitting them in a kill zone area.

Then you place them on a course where every lane you come to there is a target at an unknown distance with varying kill zone areas and you try to make the hit.

Then one day you get the chance to actually go hunting and see game and all of a sudden you remember....... Hey! I can make that shot!

So the next chance you get you return to the field target match and relive your experience with others that have been down that road and get to try different guns and gain knowledge from those who have traveled further.

It's all about shooting and enjoying it with others with the same interest.

Nowdays you might have to make a road trip to attend a match but you won't be disapointed. In my day I was fortunate to be able to attend 5 to 7 matches a year in a 5 hour radious. Plus our club held weekly get togethers at the local range in between.

And who are these guys you ask??? Just look around. They are people of all walks of life, all levels of education and social status. Somehow they all become even at the range and a good time is had by all.

Guys that shoot field target are for the most , just like folks here at the GTA . Some them are a little more competitive than others and winning is what's important to them. Others are more laid back in their approach , like me and shoot for the enjoyment of shooting with folks that have similar likes and hobbies. I have to say though, it doesn't have to be an "organized" match to have fun shooting with friends . Some of the best times I've had were at the first GTA get-together at "J"'s mom's place and at the second one shooting behind my buddy Gene's house . I never realized shooting army men, paintballs and potatoes could be so much fun . kirby

Thanks for the great idea.  Now I know what to do with those funky potatoes in my kitchen that are starting to grow arms and legs.
