Few tricks to get clean holes w/o adjusting the pistols velocity (which you can't do in many cases)
- use a WADCUTTER pellet
- use a GOOD target. This has to do with the paper itself. The short fiber targets of the Edelmann targets cut cleaner than the long fiber paper in other targets.
- for home made targets, use a heavy paper. I use 60 pound stock. Some people use up to 110 pound stock. But you need to know what your printer can handle, so you don't damage your printer. I've also heard of people using "construction paper" (the stuff kids use in school...at least I did) but that might be hard to print on.
- use a target backer. I use cardboard (cereal boxes, corrugated boxes, etc). The cardboard acts like a cutting board to the pellet (the knife) and the pellet can punch a cleaner hole. When the holes start to rip (vs being punched), then its time to replace the backer as it is probably shot out. With a target backer, I can use the cheap targets and print my targets on cheap 20 pound copy paper.
Some people have "baked" their targets in the oven. But even if you are careful that is a fire danger, so I do NOT recommend it.
