Any testing done with the raptor pellets?
« on: December 29, 2006, 10:34:52 PM »
My hunting buddy gave me some Raptor pellets from gamo, 50 in a tube. I was wondering if anyone has tried them or if there even worth trying at all. Thought I'd ask before I ran some through. If nothing else they would make nice gold fillings he he. Ed

They shoot great out of my Crosman 1377 .177 pump pistol out to 20 yards or so, but I won't use them in any of my rifles for fear of causing damage to the rifle.  I've read reports of people who used them in their rifles and the they say accuracy drops off dramatically as the distance increases, something I can attest to with regard to my 1377 pistol.  As for the concern over damaging the gun,,,,,, the theory is that the pellets are so light that they don't provide enough resistance for when the gun is fired causing "piston slam".  I am certainly no air gun expert so I'm not saying the theory is correct, but I've read enough people, much more knowledgeable than me, make posts advising not to use them  in springers so I never have.

Hey ED, I have tried them in my Shadow 1000. Probably fired around 100+ pellets with no apparant trouble. I am no expert though. As far as accuracy goes, they are not so good. I find I have to sight my scope in for these pellets. Shooting paper at 70-80ft away it seems every 3rd or so shot flies away from the rest of the group. They are however very fast. I tried the Tomohawk pellets out the other day. Only a few. They seem pretty accurate. I will do more testing with them soon and will report the results.

Hello Shadow,

I have tested  the Raptors a little. IMO they are decent for big pests out to 10 yards because of the deep penetration you can get from them as being so hard. If I’m going to shoot a raccoons or opossum within 10 yards, I use Raptors because I would rather put a 2” deep hole in it’s head, instead of gash that a lead pellets might do.

I shoot a shadow 1000 and from what Gamo claims about dry firing, I figure a 5grain pellet shouldn’t hurt (well not much) the gun. I only shoot raptors when shooting at the  above named pests. When I got the s1k from Wal mart, I picked up two packs of Raptors and one pack of Rockets. I still have pellets left from that purchase. After becoming addicted to this sickness (I mean hobby) and got smarter (ha! ha! ha!)   :)  , I only use lead pellets, except for above named pest.

In the very little long range testing I have done I have found that accuracy does drop off to the point of being useless.

This is just my option and is subject to change without notice.  :D

Happy Shooting!
Glenn

Thank's for the info Glenn. Since I posted this I've found out that there kinda hard on springer's. They don't create enough pressure in the chamber, causing piston slam. :0 Outside 10 to 15 yrd,s there flip, flop and flying all over. I dont use them, still got a full tube sitting in my gun case. If you haven't tried the Predator's, you should, accurate and deadly.! Thank's again for the info. :)  HUNTING, Ed

They sure pump up the FPS, but myself, I would not buy any because of how lite they are. I estimate if you use these pellets for target shooting, that you will damage something, like a spring etc. For sure they would shortin the life of your air gun, I would think. Besides I have not read any articles on using them with small game. Not birds but squirrels and rabbits past 30 yards or so. In my opinion the raptors are a marketing gimmick..... :) that is my two cents worth..:)
