The new Air Force Edge diopter...
« on: March 02, 2009, 03:00:19 PM »
Is FANTASTIC!  Got it in today, got to shoot it tonight.  This is a precision piece, I "shot the box", something I've never done with any sight or scope.  Got it zeroed off the bench with my S200 shooting R-10's, then did the box.  30 clicks left, then up, then right, then back to zero.  3 shots at each stopping point, the only reason they weren't all one holers was me.  Perfectly square, and exactly 1/2" on each side.  And I couldn't tell the last 3 from the first 3.  For those that would like more info, Tom Gaylord has already done a pretty good write up, and explains the details better than I can.  Here's the link for those interested: http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2008/11/airforce-match-sight-set-part-1.html  Because of the design, this thing has a huge amount of gross vertical adjustment, which I can't use at the moment.  My front sight forces me to set it as low as possible.  But if the Edge front sight ever becomes available, I'll be able to raise my sight plane, which will let me bring my head up and hopefully improve my shooting.  In the meantime, considering the options, this is an excellent value, I'm very pleased.  Now to find a nice adjustable iris aperture for it...

As you found out, that gross adjustment makes it very flexible to adapt to fit many different rifles.
Example, the current FWB rear sight will NOT work on an early FWB 300.  Why, because it cannnot adjust vertically enough to work with the 300.
Once you get the sight plane raised, I would venture to say that your shooting WILL improve.  I find it more comfortable (easier to shoot) with a higher sight plane, so I can keep my head upright.

Here is another trick that you can use right now.
Cant your rifle over to the side.
You can now keep your head upright and shoot.
The only trick in this is repeating the same angle for the cant for each shot.  This is where the metal front sight insert with the horizontal bar makes it easier to dupliate the cant angle, vs the clear plastic insert that has no angular reference.

And thanks for the report.
I'll keep that sight in mind when I need one.

Agree with what Gary says.  The higher sight plane is a big advantage for achieving a firm cheek weld without excessive cant or bending your neck excessively.  A much more comfortable shooting position.  Dropping the butt plate 1-2 cm may also help the fit.

Emailed AF yesterday to say nice things about the diopter and bug them about the front sight.  Got a nice response back, the front sight hasn't hit the retailers yet but they have them, I'll be ordering today, maybe see it this week?  Will keep ya'll posted.

Gary, while canting the rifle works, I work construction, so my brain says a horizontal line WILL BE HORIZONTAL!  I've tried canting my S200, but the cross bar in the front aperture being crooked just bugs me too much :-).  Another advantage (for me) to the clear aperture in the new sight.

And Tommy, I've already dropped the butt on the S200 as far as it will go.  Luckily, mine has the target stock.  Of course, once I get the new front sight and raise my sight plane, I'll need to make some more spacers so I can raise the cheek piece.  I used all I had to extend the LOP, and haven't made any more yet.  Later.
