QB Project

I got this QB79 action on the board and have been planning on making a stock but just couldn't seem to get around to it.  So I posted and Rob Roberts sent me his extra one for free.  Great guy!  But it was the old style and a bit short of LOP for me so I ordered up one of Stephen Archer's blemished stocks for $19.  Trouble was he didn't have any 79 stocks only 78s.  So I got around to it this afternoon and with a saw and a dremel here's the result.  I think it looks pretty good but of course isn't passing as a Rapid but for about $65 it is pretty cool.  Tomorrow I"m going to sand and bedliner the bottle and stock.  Next up is a tune as it is only shooting 650 fps.  I tuned up a 78 with notes from CDT's website and got it up to 730's.  I'll post pics of it in bedliner but being realistic if I say I'm doing it tomorrow you might see it in few weeks ;-)

Hey Andy,
Could you post some pictures of the inletting you had to do on the stock for the gas block and how it looks without the bottle?  This is a project I have been thinking about and wondering if it is within my skills.  Your stock looks nice and even around the bottle; just what I'm hoping to be able to do.

I used a pull saw to cut the stock and then used a belt sander to give it a curved in look.  I did the rest using a Dremel.  While I started out with a bit I quickly realized the wood was so soft that the large sanding drum that comes with the Dremel kit made quick work of the wood.  It also gave a smoother finish than using the bit.  If I would have used the sanding drum, the inletting would have looked better.  You don't see it anyway.

Here's some top and front views.  The groove at the bottom of the inletting is a channel to provide clearance for the burst disk on the bottle.

Oh, here's the last of the pictures.  You can see the measurements in relation to the stock hold down bolt hole.  It is 3.25 inches back.  The other dimensions as shown in the picture.

Stayed up a bit later last night to get three coats of bedliner on the stock and bottles.  Boy that stuff dries fast!

So here it is and I like the way it turned out.  The bedliner is easy to shoot and since it dries fast you can get a nice good durable coating.  I reinstalled the LDC and was up and in business.  Shoots CPHs the best and the tune is next.  

I think the next project is HPAing one of these.

Oh, so I'm in the garage and hear a ruckus out in front of the house.  I came up the hill to see a police car with lights flashing and some people standing on my driveway pointing.  My two dogs were barking up a storm.  So what do I see but a sick racoon wandering around in the street.  This poor guy was obviously on his last legs at 8AM.  He wandered for 30 minutes back and forth, stumbling and looking like he was about to die.  Several times he arched his back, looked up to the sky and raised his right paw as if to say take me now.  It ended when the police couldn't wait any longer for animal control and took him on my front lawn with a bolt action .22.  It took three shots to put him out of his "misery."  The police were waiting for the "right shot" on the grass.  I offered some subsonic primer only .22 shells but they had to use "police issue ammo."  Geez official issue .22?  

I was going to offer up one of my .22 pellet rifles including the Career but thought better than to draw attention to the aresenal in the basement!  I was dying to take care of this myself but my long term benefit of remaining unkown to the police prevailed.  Damn what a conumdrum!

I really like the way that turned out!!! What size of bottle is that? Is all you have to do is buy the adapter and then get a larger bottle? If there isn't a paintball place near, will a welding supply place re-fill it??

Sorry for all the questions, But I am mostly a spring gun fanatic, at least until I got the QB!!

I think you are on to something.  This simple conversion looks WAY better than the standard QB79.  The extended front (done as well as you did) makes all the difference.  Nice work.

andy,....my compliments on a genuinely sinister looking transformation !!  i also wanted to take a moment to thank you once again for all the time you spent pm'ing me regarding my qb inquiries. although ive yet to pull the trigger on the qb79, rest assured your latest creation will be the motivation to do so..!!

Picked it up at Murray's / O'Reilly's autosupply.  I put three coats on the stock and two bottles and it feels like there's still 2/3 left in the can.  Guess I'll have to pick up another rifle destined for bedliner!  It worked better than I thought it would and looks to be a very durable finish.  Great for a field gun!

I picked up 4 9 oz Brass Eagle Flame bottles for about $26 shipped on a really awesome deal.  At the time I had no use for them but now I know what I'm using them for!  The fit perfectly on the gun without any adapters.  Just screw them in.  It is  a tight fit but they don't rub the barrel.  

IIRC it is $0.25/oz or $2.25 for the fill.  I can shoot forever with a tank.  I'm guessing around 400-500 shots.

I'm thinking of doing another QB79!

Nice Job.  Stock looks a lot nicer than the issue stumpy one and it's nice to have some place to put your left hand besides bare-cold metal.

For whatever reason, the pcitures just started working for me....had looked through out the postings, but until just now, got nothing.
