polish compression chamber yes or no?
« on: January 13, 2010, 03:26:05 AM »
i am working on my g1 extreme and i was wondering if i should polish the compression chamber. i have already polished my spring, spring guide and tophat along with the piston both inside and out.
will the seal still work if the chamber surface is too smooth and if so will itl increase velocity? any info on at home tunes would be appreciated.

The compression chamber shouldn't be polished but honed and crosshatched. Crosshatching provides a place for the lube that's applied during a tune to go. This procedure applies if your installing a new piston seal and not using the same one. Polishing the compression chamber works great if your using a leather piston seal but it may result in a drop in compression with a standard piston seal. Just my thought's on the subject. Ed

thanks for the info Ed. i think i will leave it as is. one  more question. can you use spacers with a stock spring or are they set from the factory. when i cock my g1 it seems to have a little bit more to go as if the spring is not fully compressed. is this normal or should  i add a spacer to take up the slack. also do spacers increase velocity. im trying to get as much out of her without loosing accuracy.

When you first cock it and has an inch or two slack..your spring had it's service time. It will still give you probably 700's fps with it. A full length OEM spring and good seal can give you mid 900's fps. I get my parts from Crosman
PISTON SEAL           B18-04-1A   $3.60
PISTON SPRING   B18-00-4D   $5.70
Don't forget lube, Moly & Spring Tar.

When I do a home tune on my AGs, I grind, smooth and polish out the ends of the spring. Add moly lube before reinstalling. I also buff out stainless steel washers, lube and install one on each end of the spring if possible. This gives the spring a smoother action, makes it easier to cock, reduces the torque when firing and adds a little preload to the spring. I think the preload will give you slightly better power out. Just MHO.

Happy Shooting!!!!

You can use polished spacer's in the piston but do it sparingly to reduce friction for the spring and add some weight to the piston. Too much weight in there will give you negative result's with possible piston slam. :9 Ed
