Cleaning and Oiling Discovery
« on: January 25, 2010, 07:56:47 AM »
I'm new to the sport.  I have a Discovery which is very accurate except right after I clean and oil the rifle. I use Air Venturi Bore Cleaner & Degreaser and the oil it with Beeman MP-5 Metalophilic Oil.  My groups go from under 1/2 in. to over 1 in. (not reallt grouping) for the first 30 or 40 shots.  It then goes back to the tight groups until I clean again.  Is this normal? Thanks

What about running a clean patch through the barrell after oiling it?  I've heard that most cleans require several fouling shots before accuracy returns..

Hi John,,, welcome to GTA, very nice to have you with us  :)

The only thing I use to clean the barrels of my air rifles, springers and PCP's, is "Goo-Gone" citrus based cleaner.  I use a length of plastic weed whacker line to pull the patches through the barrel.  Sharpen one end of the line to point so you  can pierce the patches.  On the other end use a lighter or match and melt the end of the line into a round ball.... to hold the patch on the line as you pull.

Soak a patch with Goo-Gone, insert the line into the breech and push it through until it comes out the muzzle end of the barrel,,, now pull it through.  Alternate with patches lightly coated in Goo-Gone and then clean patches until the clean patches come out with little or no residue on them.  That's it, you're done.  No need to clean it again until your accuracy starts to suffer.  After you clean it shoot it a bit to "lead up" the barrel and you're ready to rock :)

Don't use metal cleaning rods and they can ruin your barrel.  As for the rubber O-rings in the rifle they only need lubrication once in a great while and only use divers silicone (available at dive shops) or a similar product,,,, any other substance stands the chance of ruining your seals...

Again, welcome to GTA... I'll be looking forward to your future posts.....

This is quite normal and the first few shots after cleaning "condition"  the barrel, meaning a light layer of lead particles gets on the barrel and this actually improves accuracy.
