My SMK XS19
« on: April 23, 2010, 03:57:16 AM »

Bought a near mint slightly used .22 cal SMK19 a while ago. Same as the Crosman Quest.

A 12 fpe version, fitted a Quest spring, preloaded it so it could still be closed safely without a spring compressor, 16.3 fpe with H&N Hollow Points.

Am waiting for a custom spring and new tophat and spring guide, should be 14 fpe with far less recoil compared to the Quest spring.

Also fitted a GRT III trigger yesterday, a huge improvement.

Am very happy with this rifle, the first springer I ever tweaked.

I have a Quest 800X, - Turbo Tuned by Gene, plus a GRT-III trigger, one great gun!!! - Did I say a pleasure to shoot & accurate too??? ... If it's anything like a Quest, - you're gonna enjoy it.

Thanks, I like the stock too, this UK version of the Quest/Gamo 220/440 has a darker color compared to the Quest if I'm not mistaken. Couldn't find a .22 Quest but was lucky to be able to get this one from someone in the UK.

The black thing fitted on the end of the barrel is legal in the Netherlands and makes it neigbour friendly, can only shoot indoors, downstairs 12 meter max livingroom/kitchen/utilityroom.

I agree, it seems to be quite accurate. Shot the target below before fitting the GRT III trigger. Tried another one the day after when the GRT III trigger arrived but it was worse which was to blame on me, I'm ill and have my good days and my bad days.

Sitting, forearm supported on 3 pillows, 10 meter / 11 yards, 5 shots per bull:

Oh and I completely forgot to thank Bob / Charlie da Tuna: the trigger is awsome and the tuning guide which can be downloaded from http://www.charliedatuna.com was a great help.

The only thing different was the 12 fpe factory spring: close to NO preload.

After flattening the ends of the Quest spring and polishing them I preloaded the spring like this:

Tophat / o-ring od washer / washers / spring / washers / piece of the "plastic spring guide" / o-ring od spring guide / the actual spring guide.

NO twang whatsoever.

Before the o-rings were fitted there was twang.

Have never read about using o-rings in the spring assembly, just tried it out of curiousity.

Maybe a springer expert can approve or disaprove, I'm not sure.

Received the custom 33 coil spring kit yesterday, tried several set ups, liked the set up you can see in the attachment.

Changed it afterwards to 13.5 fpe and it's a very smooth and friendly rifle now, shooting 14.5 grain Superdomes at 645-650 fps.

Will try accuracy at 10 meters next week.

I've used RWS Superdomes and JSB Exact Express.

This was the second time I did target practice at 10 meters with this rifle, room left for improvement: the shooter, eg. ME ;-)

Final set-up.

Due to backproblems the 10 meter target was shot sitting, no support. The 8 meter target was shot rested @ 8 meters.
