New Purchase Remington NPSS
« on: May 19, 2010, 04:06:45 AM »
I have been intensely researhing air/pellet guns for 2 weeks now, reading forums, reviews  etc. After one purchased and returned Remington Vantage and additional readiing of forums and videos I finally narrowered it down to 4 guns, all nitro piston, all .177 ,the Gamo  Wisper Classic, The Walther Talon, The Benji NP XL and The Reminton NPSS,  Further reading narrowed it down to the Benji NP XL and the Remington NPSS,  I really wanted that Benji being a collector of real firearms I have come to appreciate a solid look and feel to such devices, and the Benji's weight and look drew me to it along with the reviews, After reading more Benji reviews some info on the Remington NPSS surfaced from a Benji review, So last night I pulled the purchase trigger and went with the Remington NPSS,

Feeling still uncertian I had picked the better gun I continued to research forums, Which brings me to this forum, After reading what some of the members here had to say about the Remington NPSS I feel abit better that I made a good choice, I read several reasuring post here that it is a good gun,
initially with a 150.00 self imposed budget, (which was doubled to 300.00 after the Vantage dissapoinment) I hope I'm getting a good one in the Remington NPSS, looking forward to the FedEd delivery !

 Thanks DB

Welcome to GTA  DB, it's very nice to have you with us.  Don't give your purchase another thought,,,, you picked a great shooter and I have no doubt you'll be very happy with it.  There are quite a few GTA members who own the NPSS and I'm sure they'll chime in and reassure you that you made a good choice  :)   I don't own one but I've shot them and they are nice shooters for sure.  I recently bought a Trail NP XL in .22 caliber and love it.  It's one heck of a hunting rifle but definitely not for casual target shooting.  The NPSS on the other hand has a much lighter cocking effort so it's a much better choice for target shooting or just plinking, but at the same time the NPSS has more than enough power to make it a very effective small game rifle.   The only thing I would suggest would be to order one of CDT's drop in trigger replacements,,, it's the best money you can ever spend on your rifle.......

Again, welcome    :)

Jeff

Welcome DB,

I agree with Jeff. The NPSS is a good choice. It has gotten high marks from some very experianced shooters-  including Gene,  who is a very experienced AG tuner and our host with this site.

And, Like Jeff, Im very pleased with my 22 cal Trail XL, but I'm not sure you would have liked the XL  in 17 cal.

Hope you get much enjoyment from it.

Paul.

DB, if you like to shoot targets and small game you picked a winner. The NPSS air guns are rock solid guns. Like the other guys said, I have had all the ones you mentioned on my work bench at one time or another. For sure you need not worry about your purchase...:) Maybe you need to play the LOTO...:)

You picked a Winner!

Thanks for the positive feedback, I definitely  am looking forward to the Fed Ex delivery Tues, along with the rifle I bought 4 diffrent type and weight pellets,

With all the know how and experience here on the boards, I feel like I have gotten quite the education in these 2 short weeks I am amazed at all I have learned, and look forward to learning more,

I haven't owned a air gun in 30 years... longer than that when I had my first one, a Daisey 840 was the first one I commited to memory, it was like pulling teeth to get my mother to let me have a gun, I was 12 give or take, the thousand of BB's I shot ! I was quite a good shot too( imho ) I could shoot a penny dead center at 25 feet, Well then there was a bartered crossman 760 ( Which my neighbor and childhood friend) shot out my front tooth with! thats story for another time, And finally a Daisey 880 powerline where I honed my marksmanship skills through my teens, and one break barrel .177 I cant recall if Crossman or Daisey due to lack of knowledge at the time it didnt last long and was a dissapointment, Well at 18 I could buy a .22 Marlin rimfire for 15 bucks more and left the airguns behind, Became a firearm collector and enthusiast avidly throught my 20's and 30's  in my 40"s due to general inconviences and new intrest, my collection sits locked away in the dark,

Well here we are back at two weeks ago, Me and my lady friend are avid gardners love to landscape the yard and grow stuff to eat, love to be outside enjoying nature etc, Grackles ! or shall I say the need for less grackles was the reason which is turing into a exciting new intrest in air guns, two weeks ago after a couple days reading and shopping I bought a Remington 1200 Vantage, 5 days later I returned it, the inaccuracy, inconsistancy I was dissapointed completely, I continued reading  reviews forums etc, I began to learn the nature of airguns, spring recoil back and forth, deiseling  long break in periods, persnickety pellet choices the Artilery hold and then ther is the tuning ! wow I never knew of such its been a eye opening two weeks lots of very intriguing information, In all fairness the Remington Vantage is probably an ok gun my lack of understtanding mostlikely was a big part of the dissapointment. :o

I shared much of what I have learned with my friend amazed at the depth it can go, I look forward to learning more ..unfortunatly it looks like a expensive hobby on the horizion.. I surley cant own just one air...not and get a full experience if I hit the lotto Icould easliy drop 10 grand in a week as a start. and then there is the  history of air guns dating back to the 1500's amazing ! I am really looking forward to Tuesday.. :)

Well thanks again for all the great insight and sorry for the novel but I am excited about this new found intrest the airgun... Oh and then there is tuning surley I will have to experiend what a fine tuned rifle is like  how could I not after reading all I have read about tighter grouping and such, Yea I want a 50 yard dime grouping ! or better   :emoticon:

I'll repeat what Jeff said - get a CBR trigger from Charlie, it makes a world of difference. Make sure you clean the barrel with Goo-Gone before shooting. They're pretty liberal with the oil - my first few patches were black as night.
As far as accuracy - my NPSS was anything but accurate at first.I honestly thought there was somthing wrong with the gun,or I was the lousiest shot in the world. There was a break-in period of a couple hundred shots, after which pellets that were all over the place suddenly started going exactly where I pointed.Jsb Exacts, Predators, Air Arms Falcons,Beeman Silver Bears - all will give a ragged 1/2 to 3/4 inch hole for 10 shots at 25 yards.I think you're going to like your choice.

And I'll repeat it also...the CBR trigger is a must!! I have a 22 Crosman NPSS and just love shooting this gun. I also have a Rem. Vantage that I have reshaped the stock and cut the barrel and put a muzzle brake on and is a great shooter and haven't even tuned it yet. Really like the 22 cal as I do more hunting right now. You are going to have a ball with your new gun.

 Rem.Vantage/chopped and tuned by me.

I own a Crosman .177 NPSS with the CBR trigger from CDT. Happy as a clam with it, the CBR trigger made an already good gun a whole lot better. Highly recommended (both the NPSS and CBR trigger).

I have to second that one Remo...:) I have two of them and have the triggers in both. They sure are nice to shoot with that trigger in them..
