Scopes For CFX
« on: May 18, 2007, 09:23:26 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Currently I have a powerline 3-9 mounted on my CFX with a medium profile accushot mount.  Anyway I have been shooting with it like this for about a month and every so often I notice it gets off a little.  I keep checking the mounts and they aren't slipping so I think its the scope.  Either way I got very frustrated this afternoon.  I set up on the bench to sight it in and had it right on at 25 yards.  From here I plinked for about 30 minutes between 25 and 30 yards at all sorts of stuff.  Then I noticed I was starting to miss everything so I benched it again.  I was so shocked!  Off the bench at 25 yards which I had just sighted in at it was about 3 and a half inches low.  I shot about 4 groups thinking I had screwed it up or something but they were all in the same place about that low.

Now I am basically convinced the scope is no good.  I resighted it in and am about to go plink again for another 30 minutes and if it does that again I am getting a new scope.  So does anyone have any advice?  I am interesting in knowing what scopes ya'll use on your CFXs.

Thanks
Brian

Check your stock screws, if they are loose it will cause that problem.

Bryan,
I can offer a suggestion for a CFX scope. I am using a Nikko Sterling 4-12x42 scope on my CFX. It fits perfectly allowing access to the loading breech and the scope itself is just great: clear, bright, sharp. good controls and handles the power of the CFX. The NS scope comes with a one-piece mount which is very nice but does not have a stop pin which is definitely needed on the CFX. I tried the NS mount and it eventually traveled rearward. I am using Accushot high-mount rings with a stop pin (about $15 from Pyramyd). They are simple, elegant and very strong. The scope never has moved with using the stop pin in the hole provided in the CFX scope rail. The NS scope can be had from airgundepot.com for $99.90. I just ordered another one this morning for a new rifle. I highly recommend the scope/mount combo for the CFX. They also have lower powered NS scopes for less money, but I really like the 4-12 range.

I tried several different scopes when I had my CFX.  Started with a the BSA 2-7x32 AO it came with, not bad, but wanted more power and better light "gathering".  Most of the time I had it I was using a Leapers 3-12x44 full size, with 30mm tube.  Although large and heavy, this was an excellent scope for the CFX, very bright and clear, and a very good power range.  I had it in an Accushot 1pc. medium mount.  As good as the optics were, the mechanics didn't hold up, at least for me.  In fact, of 6 different Leapers scopes I've had in the last year, all have had problems.  Considering the number of people that swear by their Leapers scopes, I can only assume that a chunk of it is sheer rotten luck :-)!  If you'd like more info on my Leapers saga, look under the Scope Reviews.

I had a Simmons 44 Mag for awhile, good scope but I never liked it as well as the Leapers and got rid of it.  This is another scope that lots of people really loved, too bad Simmons discontinued it.

Like Gerry, I recently discovered the Nikko Stirling scopes.  I don't have one of the Airkings (YET!), but I do have a Platinum Nighteater 3-10x42 on my HW 77.  Exact same size as the one Gerry has, main difference I know for sure is that mine is a side focus parallax adjuster instead on the front objective lens.  I think the lenses and coatings are a little more upscale, but that's a guess based on web site info.  I haven't done a side by side comparison.  I think either one would be an excellent choice for a CFX.  BTW, I got mine from Cheaper than Dirt, $123 with shipping.

For the shooting I do, I feel that a 3 or 4-12x is about perfect, and a front objective in the 40-44 mm range also works well.  This gives a nice balance between weight, length, and power, and still lets you mount the scope reasonably low if you prefer.  And I think I've run on long enough :-), hope this is some help.

Currently using a Centerpoint 4-16x40 with illumination on the .177 CFX, and a Centerpoint 3-9x40 w/o illum. on the .22 CFX.
I like them both, but the 3-9 is about 1.5-2" shorter, and this makes loading easier, as the larger scope's objective bell stops just behind the loading port.
