QB78 Brass Bolt Handle

Hi Guys and Girls
 

I took the plunge today and stripped my new QB78, I didn't do any mods just deburred it where it needed it and polished the bolt and housing.  Along with the custom quiet muzzle break that I made last week I made a beautiful polished brass bolt handle. Have a look and let me know what you think, if anyone wants one I can do them for £20 plus postage. I live in the UK so the custom break is fine.

Very nice Jon, taking that little bit of extra time to polish it is worth it isn't it. I've been thinking of making some bolt handle but haven't settled on what style yet, leaning toward one with a bend on the end and a bit longer so it will be easier to hang on to if needed. Keep up the good work.

That looks pretty sharp.  I myself took my QB bolt handle, chucked it up in the drill press and gave it a go around with 220, then 400, then 600, then steel wool.  Came out pretty nice and mostly matches my brushed muzzle brake.  Also got rid of some ugly nicks and such that were in it when I got it, I'm thinking from someones channel lock pliers, but i don't know the previous owner so I'll never know for sure.  I do like brass shiny things, but I try to stick with all one finish, or all brushed steel/aluminum, or all polished steel/aluminum.  I don't have any brass yet, except for my wooden gun hardware and trigger shoe:)

Great stuff, keep it coming, I might need a brass gun before long and I'll know who to turn to.

Thanks for the comments, I do like nice shiney things. Next in line is a new laminated stock which I will be starting on today, it have been glued up and in the clamps over night. I'm also working on an idea for a magazine for the QB and will post on here with news of my progress.

There have been a few magazines made for the 78's over the years, a simple stick type with a spring loaded mag and some machining of the breech area is the easy way to go. The Crosman 400 had a more complicated one that functioned quite well but if I remember correctly but only with wadcutter type pellets. An inline mag with the pellets nose to tail won't feed domed pellets most of the time unless there is some type of mechanism to separate the pellet being loaded from the rest of the stack, If you have a way to look at an IZH-61 you can see the mag they have would be quite easy to adapt to the QB's just have to figure out how to seal the breech.

I have a design almost worked out for a rotary magazine where the pellet drops into the tray when the mag is rotated but there is only 22mm clearance between the tray and my scope so it might be a non starter. I'll have a go this week and let you know how I get on.

Have you ever had a look at the oldish Daisy 922 loaders?  They had a plastic/rubber stick that held the pellets in with friction.  The loading area of the receiver was grooved in a way that this stick would slide through, then you would just push in the bolt, pushing the pellet through the stick and into the breach.  To do this on a QB you'd have to either cut the loading notch deeper(so the pellets would be centered, or come up with some way to make the pellet drop from the stick into the loading slot.  Either way, with scope clearances a design like this wouldn't matter as the magazine slides horizontally and is no higher than the breach itself.  Maybe I'm not explaining this well...guess I'll have to draw something...time to get out my crayolas!

The biggest advantage I see of a stick over a rotary clip is scope clearance. Something like this, made of thin spring steel, that could snap onto the QB breach, then a delrin, or nylon stick could be slid into it. The steel part is in red, the nylon/delrin in green, pellets black, QB blue.

With this sort of set up, the clip would actually take up little or no scope clearance. What do you think?

Hi Danno, Thats pretty much what I have had in mind, I tried a vertical (ish) feed and it sort of worked but was tipping the pellet 180 degrees in the loading tray far too often. What are your thoughts on indexing it or just a spring to push the pellets to the feed point?

Jon, thats about the design I was trying to explain to you a couple of evenings ago. Better looking than a semi vertical but easier to catch on bushes or whatever when out and about AND should be a "drop in", no machining of the rifle.
